St. Patrick
Day
1.
Who was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick, the patron saint of
Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known. But for all his celebrity,
his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally
associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all
the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of
exaggerated storytelling.
2.
What is the purpose of St. Patrick’s
Day?
Every year on March 17, the Irish and
the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a
religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international
festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a
whole lot of green.
3.
Why is St. Patrick’s Day designated
when it is?
This Irish holiday is always
celebrated on March 17th, which is the day that Saint Patrick died.
4.
Why a certain color on St. Patrick
day?
There is not really a reason why we
wear green on St. Patrick day but we wear green because it has a lot of
connections to Ireland and springtime.
5.
Other information of interest?
According to legend, St. Patrick used
shamrocks, those three-leaf clovers, to explain the Holy Trinity of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit while trying to convert people to Christianity.
