Thanksgiving
and Thanksgiving Day
It became an official
Federal holiday in 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln
proclaimed a national day, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and
friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey,
stuffing, potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables. Thanksgiving Day is a
time for many people to give thanks for what they have. Most government offices, businesses, schools and other organizations are
closed on Thanksgiving Day. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and
Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as
one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two
centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and
states.
Reflection: Am thanksful for my family, friends, for giving us wealth, for giving everything we need in life, for giving my parents a job, for keeping my family together, education, music, and for the lessons i have learned in life.
